Andiron

The andiron is made of steel and comes into use when there are already a lot of embers lying at the bottom of the fire bowl. By using the andiron, you can place the wood at a higher level and air is able to circulate underneath enabling the wood to quickly catch fire. This way, less smoke is produced than when wood is laid directly on top of the embers. An andiron is also called a dog iron or firedog. It weighs ca. 8 kg.
